Targeting Fat Loss to a Specific Area of the Body

Perhaps the single greatest misconception about weight loss is the idea that if you are trying to lose weight in a certain part of your body, that simply doing exercises in that area will lead to weight loss in that area. This is false. Doing 1,000,000 situps might not do much at all for you if you are trying to lose belly fat.

Fact: Weight loss through cardio-vascular exercise generally causes you to lose weight all over your body, and is the basic foundation for losing fat in problem areas.

Fact: Strength training and muscle building can help build up and emphasize underlying muscles, creating a more toned, healthy, and skinny appearance (disclaimer: not everyone who is trying to lose weight is trying to get a great physique. In many cases, they are simply trying to live healthier, so this is not really an issue for those people).

To support this point about muscle building, think about a typical marathon runner. They exercise an inordinate amount, and yet, just about any short-distance runner or sprinter looks skinnier in the conventional sense as the sprinter's muscles tend to give them that toned, athletic look—no, I am not saying you should necessarily look the same as some of them are very muscular looking. These sprinters build a lot of muscle that pushes outward from under the skin. Long-distance runners do not, which is why a long-distance runner might have low body weight, but not as visible regards to how much fat they may have. Even people with severe weight loss issues, or have disorders such as anorexia or bulimia appear dangerously skinny but do not look healthy in the conventional sense because they typically lack muscle.
However, despite the inability to target a specific area, many areas of the body have factors that affect weight gain/loss, so there may be unique ways to treat or enhance your weight loss for your target area. Take, for example, the stomach. The stomach has a lot more “cortisol receptors” making them a top target for weight gain, so knowing how to modify your diet to reduce sugars, as well as reducing stress, are just two of several ways that a person can improve weight loss for a particular region. The guides also highlight health, dietary, genetic, lifestyle, exercise techniques, and other factors to help solve problem areas.
